These photographs are of the series of ten stained-glass windows Chana Zelig designed for Temple Beth-El in Northbrook, Illinois. Chana traveled to Taunnustein, Germany in October, 2006 for the fabrication at the internationally acclaimed Derix Glasstudios. The windows were created from mouth-blown glass, so they filter and reflect light in a magical way. The colors are acid-etched and hand-painted enamels and 24-karat gold. They are arranged as shown on either side of the Ark. Hebrew characters fly upward, and, on the top window, they spell out the first word of the Ten Commandments. The design is based on an account of The Revelation at Sinai in the Midrash and the mystical text, The Zohar, describing how Hebrew letters and sparks flew around randomly until they assembled themselves onto the stone tablets. The windows were installed just before Chanukah in December, 2006. |
